The bacteria, which can cause severe infections—especially in people with weakened immune systems—was discovered during routine product testing. Consumers are urged to stop using the affected soap immediately, follow proper disposal instructions, and contact the manufacturer for refunds or replacements.

Yes, you read that right. Dozens of hand soaps, cleaners and creams are currently being voluntarily recalled by DermaRite because of a risk of potentially life-threatening bacteria.
The manufacturer, based in New Jersey, has voluntarily recalled a variety of over-the-counter skin care products and soaps. Its routine testing discovered that four batches tested positive for the presence of a dangerous bacterium called Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc). The manufacturer says it has not yet received reports of people falling ill from this bacterium, however.
Bcc is typically found in water and soil and can spread from person to person. It can be dangerous to any human, but people who have cystic fibrosis or other chronic lung illnesses are especially at risk for chronic lung infection if exposed. Since the bacteria can be spread from person to person, even caregivers or those who are in close proximity to immunocompromised people can pose a risk.
Bcc bacteria, explained
Bcc is a group of bacteria that can cause symptoms that include serious lung infection, fever, fatigue, and more. And while it’s not usually life-threatening for healthy adults, people who have chronic lung conditions are at higher risk for severe symptoms. If a person is immune-compromised, the infection has a higher likelihood of spreading into the bloodstream and causing life-threatening sepsis.
Most people who become ill from Bcc are infected through contact with contaminated water, soil or surfaces or from an infected person. There is antibiotic treatment available for BCC, but some strains can be resistant to antibiotics. If this happens, it’s difficult to treat.
